Stone restoration in Belgravia

Restored marble hallway in a Belgravia townhouse

Belgravia's white stucco terraces contain some of London's most demanding stone interiors: grand Portland limestone entrance halls, sweeping Carrara and Calacatta staircases, and intricate marble bathrooms in five-storey embassy and private residences. We work discreetly across Belgravia, Eaton Square and Chester Square, restoring etched and scratched surfaces without altering the original finish of listed properties.

Belgravia is one of the most concentrated collections of grade II and grade II* listed residential stone in central London. The great white terraces around Eaton Square, Belgrave Square and Chester Square were built between 1826 and 1855 on the Grosvenor estate, and their entrance halls, principal staircases and reception bathrooms still carry a remarkable amount of their original Portland limestone, Carrara marble and period terrazzo.

Our Belgravia work falls into three broad patterns. First, restoration of original Portland limestone flagstones and steps that have been softened by a century and a half of foot traffic and poorly matched repairs. We remove the patchy resin fills, hone back to an even plane and reseal with a breathable impregnator that does not trap moisture in the substrate. Second, marble staircase and landing restoration in houses where decades of cleaning products have left the Carrara dull, pitted along grout lines and etched at the nosings. Third, en-suite and guest bathroom refinishing in Calacatta and honed limestone, typically between tenancies or after a light refurbishment, where the brief is to return the stone to a consistent factory-fresh finish without removing so much material that veining is lost.

Because most of these properties are listed or in a conservation area, we work to a strict dust-controlled protocol: HEPA-vacuumed extraction on every diamond pass, full floor protection across approach routes, and out-of-hours scheduling where required by the freeholder or managing agent. Marius surveys every Belgravia project personally before a quote is written, and the same team that surveys is the team that carries out the work. We do not subcontract any part of restoration in SW1.

We are fully insured with Hiscox (£2M public liability, £10M employers) and are routinely cleared by the building management offices of the major Belgravia freeholders. References available on request.
